Every year New Zealand welcomes former refugees into our communities.
Supporting a former refugee learn to drive is a practical way to support successful settlement so they can integrate and thrive in their new home.
The Open Road Driver Training helps enable practical driver education to former refugees to sit their Restricted and Full Licence.

Volunteer
Volunteer driving mentors are a key to the success of the Open Road Driver Training.
Volunteer to support a former refugee with driving coaching and practice. You will gain experience in tutoring, learn about other cultures, meet new people and make a real difference in someone's life!
If you are a confident and patient driver, who is understanding and values safe and legal driving - then we would love to hear from you.
What's Involved
Full training and induction with a qualified driving instructor is provided. After the training you will supervise a learner driver in a dual-control car over a 12 - 16 week period or until they are ready to sit the test.
What is required to volunteer?

Hold a full NZ licence for 2 years or more and be 25 years or older

Agree to a "Fit & Proper Person" Police check

Commit to 1 hour practice sessions twice per week with their Learner

Have a good level of English

Abide by the rules and guidelines of the programme
